100th Anniversary of Titanic Sinking

Can you guys believe it? 100 years ago today, the Titanic sank. 100 years ago! By now, everyone who was on that ship and survived is gone. Wow.  Anyway, I have some Titanic-related news for you all.

Many of you probably saw my previous post know how obsessed I am with the ship. I saw the movie Titanic last week and, yes, it was a completely new experience to finally see it on the big screen. The 3D was absolutely pointless though: ten minutes into the film I forgot I was watching a 3D movie. It was that subtle. If you want to see the movie in theaters again, see it in 2D so you don't have to pay the 3D surcharge.

This new miniseries from Britain aired yesterday on ABC and will be airing the final part tonight. Personally, I don't know why the world needs another Titanic miniseries...I know there's one from 1996 already. And this looks almost too similar to the 1997 movie. But it does have a cool concept: the first three parts each follow a different person and lead right up to a cliffhanger. Then, in the final part we learn who survived and who didn't. Kind of neat.

Finally, I made some outfits inspired by Rose's dresses in the Titanic movie! I tried to make the outfits be somewhat preppy--something I would wear myself--rather than making them too costume-y.
I wasn't a fan of the hat myself, but KT liked it, so I thought, why not?

I love the purse in this outfit. I included the butterfly headband because there's a scene in which Rose is wearing a butterfly clip in her hair (yeah, I've watched the movie way too much) and I thought it went well with the outfit.

For these outfits I combined the yellow color of her dress with lace that is reminiscent of the time period. And of course I had to add the Kate Spade bracelet and anchor earrings.

Tell me what you think! Any of you guys going to watch the Titanic miniseries?

Instagram

Ever since I heard of Instagram, I've been waiting for the app to come out on Android phones. Instagram is a cute little app that makes your cell phone pictures look photoshopped via the use of fun filters and borders. It's also a social network--you can follow people and keep up with the pictures that they post. The app also lets you send these pictures to Facebook and Twitter.

I stayed up and played with the app until two in the morning, which is a little sad. Here are some of my favorite pics that I've tweaked.

The first two pics are views of Chicago from outside of my dorm room, while the rest are just random Chicago shots I took over the summer. Enjoy!

(Ok, the last picture isn't that artistic, but it was a post-it note that someone put on the women's bathroom mirror on Valentine's Day. It made me smile.)

One criticism I have with the app is that I feel really lazy using it. People take hours to edit their photos on Photoshop. Now all we have to do is just tap a button and our cell phone pictures are instantly edited. It kind of harps back to my previous post about Polaroid cameras. I feel like the art of photography is slowly disappearing through the use of technology.

Either way you look at it, Instagram is still fun to use. Are any of you on Instagram? My username is preppypremed. Come find me!

P.S. Make sure you back up your cell phone pictures. My phone died over the summer and I lost about a year's worth of photos. So depressing. Don't be like me, back up your pictures!!

Watches

I feel like watches are slowly dying out. At my university, if you ask someone the time they'll just pull out their cell phone and check (yes, I'm guilty of doing this as well). It's a little sad because I think that watches are such cool accessories--both stylish and functional.

My parents bought me this watch for my 13th birthday, and I was estatic. It had cool exchangeable leather straps and it told me the date. This was long before I was allowed to have a cell phone, so I wore this every day. Once I fell down on the pavement during recess and cracked the dial. I felt so bad that my parents went out and bought me a replacement watch for it. Needless to say, this watch has seen better days.

My grandma bought me this watch when I was confirmed. It's (apparently) really expensive, so I don't want to take it to college with me. Too many girls have reported their jewelry missing from living in the dorms. Whenever I come home for the holidays, though, I try to wear it as much as possible. I love the mix of silver and gold, as well as the simple watch dial.

Here are some cute watches I fell in love with!

I gotta say, I love this Kate Spade watch the best. It works as both a bracelet and a watch. The color is magnificent, and the inscription on the inside is cute.

Seiko is apparently really popular on college campuses. I kind of like the above watch, but it's a bit too big and blingy for me.

I like the idea of having a watch hidden within a charm bracelet (and I laughed when I saw that Macys.com thought I was on the Plus Size Jeans page)

Exchangeable straps! Just like my old watch.

Annndddd here's an outfit I created on Polyvore using the Kate Spade watch (it's just too cute not to use in something).

Going Retro: Polaroids

Today I'm guest posting on Sarah's blog, Shorelines and Sunshine! Check it out! Shorelines and Sunshine has a monthly feature called "Shoreline of the Month" and today I'm talking about the shoreline of Lake Michigan. Go and visit Sarah's blog!

The children's hospital I volunteer at is moving to a new location in June, which means that there's a lot of cleaning out to do. I work in the teen "playroom", so we've been slowly cleaning and discovering things in our closets we never thought existed.

One treasure we found: a legit Polaroid camera that looked like it was from the 80s.

Imagine four college girls trying to get this contraption to work. By the time we were all in elementary school, digital cameras had already been invented and film was becoming a thing of the past.  Luckily, a mom of a patient came to our rescue. Having majored in photography, she knew the ins and outs of the camera and taught us all how to load the film. It's so weird: I never remember having to load film into a camera, even when I was a little kid. It's been digital cameras all the way.

Long story short, we had a fun day volunteering and took pictures of everyone we could find. Here's a picture of myself on a retro Polaroid. Sorry for the blurriness!

And now I really want a Polaroid camera. I went to Urban Outfitters' website because I knew they always had retro-looking cameras whenever I visited them.

Alas, no Polaroid cameras. They do carry this cute little hipster camera, which actually uses film. When was the last time you saw a camera that used film?

I don't even think Polaroid is making those cameras anymore. This is the closest camera I could find to the original one (it's the Polaroid Instant Camera 300), but it just doesn't seem the same.

Also,I just learned that Polaroid made these cameras back when I was a kid. I always thought they were just toys. Does anyone remember these? They took tiny instant pictures that were stickers. I remember sticking those things all over my the house, much to my mom's dismay.

Guess I'll just stick to my digital camera for now. Does anyone else miss the days of old-fashioned cameras and film?

Easter Break in an Eggshell

The three days went by so fast! Here's the gist of my extended weekend.

Cinnamon Challenge

I'm obviously still 12, because I tried the Cinnamon Challenge this weekend. For those of you who don't know, the challenge is to swallow a whole teaspoon of cinnamon without any water.

Yeah...that's impossible.
This video from GloZell on Youtube has gone viral. I wanted to try the challenge because I thought surely this lady was exaggerating.

She's not. The stuff literally gets stuck in your throat and burns--you feel like you can't breathe. I spit out cinnamon all over the kitchen and had to vacuum it up. KT thought I was being dramatic and had to try for herself. That didn't work out too well either.

Reading

Yep, two English books that I procrastinated on reading couldn't wait to finish. The girl on the cover of Uncle Silas seriously freaks me out. She looks like the girl from Orphan.

Essay Writing

I was obviously very productive on those two essays I needed to finish.

Hanging Out With the Fam

We watched Persepolis together over the weekend. The movie is about a girl growing up in Iran during the 1970s, which is a time of turmoil and revolutions. It was a good thing my parents watched the movie with me--they remember the war Iran had with Iraq in the early 80s, so they explained the controversy for me. I feel very naive when it comes to problems in the Middle East, and I want to read more books about all the issues going on over there.

Sunday I had Easter brunch with my extended family at an Irish pub. I don't know if it's just me, but when I think of Ireland, it doesn't scream out "Easter" to me. But the food was good and I got to be with my family.

And now it's back to the grind. Hope everybody had wonderful breaks! Tell me if you did anything fun this weekend.

Egg-cellent Easter Eggs

We decorated a TON of Easter eggs today...3 dozen, actually. This year we tried doing something different: using painter's masking tape in order to create stripes on our eggs. It sort of worked!

Happy Easter everyone!

Aww, Prom!

My sister's going to her high school prom in a few weeks, but she's having a lot of trouble figuring out what dress she should pick! Aww, prom...I kinda of miss it. I wish our college had some type of formal. Oh well, I can live vicariously through my sis.

Here's some of the dress contenders!

And...the winner!

What do you guys think?? She wants to know how she should accessorize and do her hair. Any tips?

And now it's throwback time.
My high school prom! Circa 2010. I'm in the middle, in case you couldn't tell. The weather was HORRIBLE that day so we couldn't get any good outdoor shots. It rained the whole night! Hopefully things will work out better for KT.

Have a great weekend everyone. Easter is TOMORROW!
